Making French toast sticks in the air fryer will be a breeze if you follow these steps:

  1. Cut and Coat the Bread Slices

Start by preheating your air fryer to 425 degrees F. Then, cut each piece of bread into three strips.

To make the egg mixture, beat eggs, and add milk, butter, vanilla extract, and cinnamon in a bowl or a wide, shallow dish. You can also add flour and salt and whisk them. But don’t be alarmed if you notice cinnamon clumps.

Dip your toast sticks in the milk mixture. Flip them frequently to ensure that the toast sticks are fully coated. Then, add cinnamon and sugar in another bowl, and sprinkle the soaked bread with that cinnamon sugar mixture on both sides.

  1. Cook the French Toast Sticks

If it isn’t non-stick, you want to line your air fryer basket with parchment paper to prevent sticking and keep the egg mixture from soaking through and making a mess in your air fryer. Also, we recommend applying a non-stick cooking spray to the basket.

Afterward, lay the French toast sticks in the air fryer and make sure they aren’t in contact. You can cook them in batches if needed. Now, fry them at 350 degrees F. for eight minutes or until they develop a golden brown color and the inside of your air fryer sticks aren’t wet. Don’t forget to reapply the cooking spray halfway through.

  1. Serve the Air Fryer French Toast Sticks

Now that the French toast sticks have turned crispy, you can remove the air fryer basket from the appliance and leave the sticks in the air to cool down. Then, dip them in maple syrup. Sprinkle powdered sugar or confectioners’ sugar on top if you want, and serve immediately.

How to Cook Frozen French Toast Sticks

We know you may be in a rush, so how can you prepare and cook frozen French toast sticks or reheat leftover French toast sticks for a quick breakfast?

Simply air fry them as we’ve illustrated. Wait for them to cool down completely. Then, put the air fryer French toast sticks in the freezer in a single layer on parchment paper or a baking sheet before placing them in a zip-top bag or freezer-safe container.

When you want to reheat the frozen French toast sticks, you have several options. If you have a toaster oven, preheat it to 425 degrees F., and bake the sticks for about three minutes on each side. If you have a Griddle, heat the air fryer French toast sticks to 325 degrees F. for the same duration.

Another option is to microwave them. Put the air fryer French toast sticks on a microwave-safe plate, and reheat them for about one minute.

If you want the best French toast sticks, follow these hacks:

  • If you can’t find Texas toast, other less traditional “French toast” options that we love are whole-wheat sandwich bread, brioche bread, Challa bread, white bread, wheat bread, and sourdough bread.
  • If you use brioche, its soft texture will absorb the custard mixture fast. So, don’t soak it too much, or it’ll fall apart. To compare, sourdough is dense, so if you choose it, you’ll need to soak the bread more.
  • Don’t put the parchment paper in before preheating the air fryer if you don’t want it to catch fire. Instead, the correct order is to preheat it, lay the parchment paper, and spray it with cooking spray.
  • Don’t skip the preheating step if you want the air-fried French toast to cook evenly.
  • If you can’t preheat your air fryer, heat it at 375 F. for 5 minutes before putting the French toast sticks in.
  • Air fryers are different, so test the French toast stick at the four-minute mark to get the right cook time for your appliance.
  • If you want to turn your air fryer French toast sticks into a true breakfast delight, serve them with fresh fruits or even whipped cream.
